ça ira-Verlag is a book publisher in Freiburg and Vienna founded in 1985 by the Socialist Forum Initiative (ISF) and operated by the Institute for Social Criticism Freiburg (ISF) e. V. is operated. The name of the publisher is based on the French revolutionary song Ah! Ça ira back.

The Publisher

The publisher, which is closely associated with the ISF, would like to contribute to the further development of materialistic criticism and enlightenment in the tradition of Adorno's Critical Theory , in order to “promote the establishment of stateless and classless world society, ie to help realize the intentions of Critical Theory, also and especially against Germany. ”In addition, the ISF concentrates on a criticism of the state :“ It wants to help revolutionize a social condition in which, like all roads to Rome in the past, now everyone leads into the state. ”Has next the ISF set itself the task of criticizing left-wing anti-Semitism and anti-Zionism , which is not only reflected in the ça ira publishing program, but also in a dedicated partisanship for Zionism . That is why the publishing house focuses on works by authors who are critical of ideology and who have increasingly been part of the so - called anti - German movement since the 1990s , including publications by Joachim Bruhn , Stephan Grigat , Uli Krug and Gerhard Scheit . Joachim Bruhn, who died on February 28, 2019, and Manfred Dahlmann, who also died on December 24, 2017, were the publisher's most important thought leaders and authors. The publishing house always seemed to have been more of a stopgap solution than the actual publishing business, as it sees itself as "a salvage company."

The publisher has been professionalising itself for some time and has taken on the publication of collected publications and was accepted into the Kurt Wolff Foundation 's Circle of Friends in November 2019 .

Regardless of this, the publishing house publishes authors from a broad spectrum of materialistic criticism, including outspoken critics of anti-German positions. In addition to the multi-volume oeuvre by the left-communist '68 forehead Johannes Agnoli, there are works by such different authors as Hans-Georg Backhaus , Matthias Küntzel , Anton Pannekoek , Cajo Brendel , Willy Huhn , Moishe Postone , Alfred Sohn-Rethel , Georg Lukács , Roman Rosdolsky , Eugen Paschukanis and Gerhard Stapelfeldt on the writings published by ça ira. Some of them can be attributed to the council communist movement, in whose tradition the publisher sees itself in its criticism of Marxism-Leninism ; but also discussed council communism critically.

The first publication under its own publisher's title was Stefan Breuer's Aspects of Total Vergesellschaftung (1985). In addition, ça ira sells ISF publications and books by authors such as Ilse Bindseil and Ulrich Enderwitz , which were later included in the company's own publishing program, but which, due to a dispute over the relationship with Israel, kept their distance with the publisher.

For a long time ça ira was part of the Association of Left Publishers (aLiVe), an association of small publishers that has existed since 1994. Since March 2018, ça ira has been using the socialist publishing house delivery system (sova) to supply the book trade and has representatives in Germany and Austria. The publisher is regularly represented at the Leipzig Book Fair as well as the Linke Buchtage Berlin and the Critical Literature Days in Vienna. The publisher has had a branch in Vienna since 2015.

Since October 2012, ça ira has been publishing the newly founded “Zeitschrift für Ideologiekritik” sans phrase , which Manfred Dahlmann (1951–2017) and Gerhard Scheit jointly published until 2017 . In 2014 the publisher added the magazine Pólemos - magazine against common sense to its program and distributes it through the website.

The ça ira is also known for its criticism of left-wing anti-Semitism and has published works by the French philosopher and historian Léon Poliakov , Michael Landmann , Binjamin Segel , Alexander Stein , Nathan Weinstock and Karl Selent . The publisher is repeatedly attacked and criticized by traditional leftists. Writings that deal critically with the anti-Semitic pamphlet of the Protocols of the Elders of Zion are also published by ça ira, for example by the authors Alexander Stein and Binjamin Segel.

Since 2018, ça ira has published the collected writings of the philosophical Marxist and former director of the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research Friedrich Pollock , which are edited by Philipp Lenhard and are divided into six volumes. The first volume was published in June 2018. Alfred Sohn-Rethel's collected writings have been published by ça ira since 2012 and are edited by Carl Freytag , Oliver Schlaudt and Françoise Willmann . In addition, the first Alfred Sohn-Rethel biography by Carl Freytag is announced for 2020.

Other books critical of ideology , which can be understood as a continuation and narrowing of the topics of critical theory , can also be found at ça ira. Such are the writings of Joachim Bruhn (What German is), Gerhard Scheit (The tormentable body, criticism of political engagement), Thorsten Fuchshuber (rackets), Carl Wiemer (illness and crime), Manfred Dahlmann (freedom and sovereignty), Devi Dumbadze and Christoph Hesse (unregulated experience), Stephan Grigat (enemy reconnaissance and re-education, post-Nazism revisited), Renate Göllner (freedom and instinct) and Renate Göllner and Ljiljana Radonic (with Freud) are mentioned here as examples.

The works of the religious philosopher Klaus Heinrich , which were previously published by Stroemfeld , have been published by ça ira since 2020 .

Dispute over the inheritance of Johannes Agnolis

The collected works of Johannes Agnoli were published in 1990 with the consent of Johannes Agnoli and also because of personal contact with Joachim Bruhn and Manfred Dahlmann in the ça ira publishing house. After Agnoli's death (2003), the publishing house published an anthology edited by Stephan Grigat with a contribution by Johannes Agnoli. His widow Barbara Görres-Agnoli, who had the exploitation rights to Johannes Agnoli's work until her death, did not agree with the publication of the article and sued for the withdrawal of the posthumously published volume. In an open letter, she complained that Agnoli's posthumous contribution had been changed and not authorized and that it appeared in a context that “does not correspond to Agnoli's political thinking and acting”. The publisher stated in December 2006 that Barbara Görres-Agnoli had lost the trial after a new appointment was made in the ruling chamber: “The chamber at that time (three judges) was still fully behind Barbara Agnoli, which threatened legal, political and financial disaster, so This year the tide turned. The Chamber was reshuffled and now had a prudent chairman who managed the process sensibly. The testimony of those who were preparing the publication of the lecture in dispute with Johannes Agnoli at that time convinced the Arbitration Panel that everything had come about with the right things. At that time Johannes Agnoli gave his blessing for the planned publication of his lecture. This fact has now been legally established and removes the basis for the injunctive relief of Ms. Agnoli, who demanded the destruction of the books that had not yet been sold. Agnoli's lawyer did not appeal. ”The outcome of the trial reinforced the impression that the legal dispute was rather a political dispute over the authority to interpret the work of Johannes Agnoli. In addition, the publisher explained that the legal dispute had come about in such a way that the widow Johannes Agnolis was rejected by the publisher herself: “The relationship between his wife Barbara Agnoli and ça ira, on the other hand, was always fraught with conflict, especially after the publisher had rejected a manuscript from her . She felt misunderstood and, as she said, when , stupid Tippse ' made in the shade. "

The costs of the civil dispute brought the ça ira publishing house, which denied the allegations, to the brink of bankruptcy, even if the Görres-Agnolis complaint was dismissed in 2006 and another complaint by the widow for access to the publisher's sales with Agnolis Works ended in a settlement. After the reprint rights for the title The Transformation of Democracy by Görres-Agnoli were withdrawn , the new edition of Agnoli's main work was published in 2004 by Konkret Literatur Verlag . Other works by Johannes Agnoli have been published by the Stuttgart butterfly publishing house.

Exclusion from the Left Literature Fair

In 2008 the ça ira publishing house was excluded from the Left Literature Fair in Nuremberg. Most of the publishers participating in the fair saw no basis for cooperation with the Freiburg publishing house. The main reason was a book published by the ça ira publishing house, “in which war policy was advocated”. In the Israeli daily Times of Israel , however, the organizers of the Left Literature Fair were criticized for their benevolent treatment of left anti-Semitism.
