The Austrian Football Cup was played for the 72nd time in the 2005/06 season. The official name of the competition, after the competition sponsor Stiegl, was for the third time in a row the “Stiegl Cup”. For the 25th time, FK Austria Wien entered the annals as cup winners . SV Mattersburg made a premiere with the first appearance of a Burgenland team in the final. The Bundesliga was responsible for organizing and hosting the cup competition .

Competition mode

A total of 56 amateur clubs from nine regional associations, as well as the 20 professional clubs from the T-Mobile Bundesliga and the Red Zac-First League, took part in the 2005/06 season's ÖFB Cup. The amateur clubs played 28 clubs in a preliminary round, which were drawn in the first main round to those 16 Bundesliga clubs that could not qualify for a European Cup competition in the previous season. The qualification criteria for participation in the preliminary round were regulated differently in the individual federal states . Each federal state assigned a predetermined contingent of starting places to clubs from the regional league and the respective highest national league. Individual state associations made it possible for clubs from the lowest divisions to participate in this competition by awarding an ÖFB cup place to the respective state cup winners. Fixed places were allocated exclusively to all clubs in the top two professional levels. A direct meeting of Bundesliga clubs was only possible from the third second main round. The four European Cup starters only took part in the competition from the round of 16.

Mattersburg started the game as a clear underdog, but surprisingly took the lead through Patocka in the 27th minute. After Mörz's 2-0 win, the game seemed to be over despite the superiority of the field, but Vorisek (41st) and Gilewicz (64th) brought the Upper Austrians back on. After an open exchange of blows between the two teams, Michael Mörz (68th) scored the winning goal, thus shooting his Mattersburg team into the first cup final in the club's history.

In the second duel, defending champion Austria and the strong Bundesliga climber from Ried im Innkreis met . Austria won with goals from Sebo (29th), Troyanski (57th), Dheedene (69th) and Sasa Papac (91st) with a clear 4-0 and thus reached their fourth cup final within four years.

The final of the ÖFB Cup took place on May 9, 2006 in front of 20,100 spectators in Vienna's Ernst Happel Stadium . With SV Mattersburg, a team from Burgenland was able to qualify for the final for the first time in the long history of the Austrian Cup . Despite thousands of fans from Burgenland, the SVM could not playfully compete with Austria and deservedly lost 3-0. The goals were scored by Sebo (27th minute), Rushfeldt (45th) and Troyansky in the 82nd minute. Austria Wien secured their 25th cup victory and, after winning the championship this season, also got the double .

Final teams

ÖFB Supercup

The Supercup was discontinued after it had not been held the previous year. It was replaced by a so-called all-star game between the T-Mobile Bundesliga and the Red Zac-Erste Liga . The best players in the Bundesliga and the First League were selected via the Internet. The 2 most popular players of each club and the 2 best coaches in the league were included in the squad of the respective league:

T-Mobile all stars

Coach : Frenk Schinkels ( FK Austria Magna ), Didi Constantini ( FC Superfund )

Field : Jocelyn Blanchard , Filip Šebo ( FK Austria Magna ), Thomas Linke , Andreas Ivanschitz ( Red Bull Salzburg ), Michael Baur , Thomas Pichlmann ( FC Superfund ), Helge Payer , Peter Hlinka ( SK Rapid Wien ), Mario Sonnleitner , Zlatko Junuzovic ( Liebherr GAK ), Jürgen Patocka , Michael Mörz ( SV Mattersburg ), Johannes Ertl , Klaus Salmutter ( SK Puntigamer Sturm Graz ), Ferdinand Feldhofer , Václav Koloušek ( FC Wacker Tirol ), Jürgen Panis , Michael Wagner ( VfB Admira Wacker Mödling ), Sanel Kuljic ( SV Ried )

Note: The SV Ried players did not play in the UI Cup due to their preparation for the upcoming game . Sanel Kuljic had already left the club and switched to FC Sion .

Red Zac-First League Allstars

Trainer : Michael Streiter ( SCR Altach ), Karl Daxbacher ( FK Austria Magna Amateure)

Field : Mario Krassnitzer , Oliver Mattle ( SCR Altach ), Sascha Laschet , Florian Klein ( LASK Linz ), Ramazan Özcan , Armin Hobel ( SC Austria Lustenau ), Florian Metz , Christoph Saurer ( FK Austria Wien Amateure), Daniel Hofer , Georges Panagiotopoulos ( FC Gratkorn ), Markus Briza , Markus Aigner ( DSV Leoben ), Gernot Messner , Sandro Zakany ( FC Kelag Kärnten ), Mark Prettenthaler , Martin Six ( SV Stadtwerke Kapfenberg ), Christoph Cemernjak , Philipp Weissenberger ( SC Dialog Schwanenstadt ), Amir Bradaric ( SC-ESV Parndorf 1919 ), Alexander Ziervogel ( TSV Hartberg ), Harun Erbek ( FC Lustenau 07 )

Note: Players from the relegated Red Zac First League, FC Kufstein , could not be selected, but the players from the 3 promoted players from the regional leagues, SC-ESV Parndorf 1919 , TSV Hartberg and FC Lustenau 07 .

The game took place on July 14, 2006 in Ried and ended in a 3-3 draw. It should be a festival with good football, a lot of spectators and, above all, a lot of fun, but it turned out to be a flop. The mood and spectators were sparse, probably also due to the relatively bland football. The break program, a volley shoot, did not bring any enthusiasm either. The organizers therefore thought about whether the national team should play against the best legionnaires instead.
