history
- The von Bergh lords were mentioned in writing as early as 1064.
- In 1379 Wilhelm I. von dem Bergh 's-Heerenberg granted city rights.
- Bergh also had his own right to mint coins. The Muntgebouw, a house from the 15th century, still stands on the Münzwall (Muntwal).
- The annual Mechteld-ten-Ham weekend commemorates a woman who lived in 's-Heerenberg in the 17th century and was suspected of witchcraft. She was sentenced to be a witch and so had to survive the water test. She stayed alive, which is why she was burned at the stake.
- In 1757 the Herlijkheden (castles) Westervoort , Didam , Zeddam , Netterden , Etten and Gendringen belonged to the Bannerij (banner rule) 's-Heerenberg with the town of' s-Heerenberg as its center .
- 'S-Heerenberg was an independent municipality until 1821, which then became part of Bergh .
- On January 1, 2005 Bergh and Didam merged to form the municipality of Montferland .
Culture and sights
The medieval St. Pancras en Joriskerk has been Protestant since the Reformation. The Catholic St. Pankratius Church was built in the neo-Gothic style in 1895–97.
Haus Bergh is located in the town , one of the largest and most important castles in the country and the former ancestral seat of the Counts von dem Bergh . It probably goes back to the beginning of the 12th century. The buildings that are preserved today were built in the 14th to 17th centuries.
From 1910 to 1937 there was a monastery founded by German Jesuits (Bonifatiushaus) in the city , which was visited by the later archaeologist Engelbert Kirschbaum and the later missionary and Zen master Father Lassalle . In 1937 the White Fathers took over the monastery. Salesians from Don Bosco lived in the monastery from 1958 to 1971 . They called it Don Rua and ran a boys' boarding school there. In 1971 the boarding school was closed due to a lack of demand and the building was sold. The Gouden Handen creativity center was later located there .

The federal motorway 3 ( E 35 ) with the Emmerich junction runs partly along the city limits on the German side .
