The twelfth 1000 km race of Monza , also Trofeo Filippo Caracciolo, 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1973 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fourth round of the sports car world championship of that year.

The race

Before the event in Monza, three races of the sports car world championship had already been held in 1973 . In the season opening race, the Daytona 24-hour race , Peter Gregg and Hurley Haywood in a Porsche Carrera RSR were victorious in February . 1 1/2 months later won Henri Pescarolo , Gérard Larrousse and François Cevert with their Matra-Simca MS670B , three work - Ferrari 312PB the 6-hour race at Vallelunga . The 1000 km race in Dijon also ended with a success for the Matra team Pescarolo / Larrousse.

The race in Monza was also marked by the duel between Ferrari and Matra. This time the Scuderia had the better end for themselves and celebrated a double victory by Jacky Ickx , Brian Redman , Carlos Reutemann and Tim Schenken .
