Monza 1000 km race in 1972
The eleventh 1000 km race of Monza , also 1000 km di Monza, Autodromo Nazionale di Monza , took place on April 25, 1972 at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza and was the fifth round of the sports car world championship of that year.
The race
By the time the World Championship race in Monza took place in 1972, four races had already been run. All ended with overall wins for Scuderia Ferrari vehicles . At 1000 km Buenos Aires remained Ronnie Peterson and his Australian team-mate Tim taverns successful. This was followed by overall wins for Jacky Ickx and Mario Andretti at the races at Daytona , Sebring and Brands Hatch . In all cases, chassis of the 312PB racing car were used.
Up until the race in Monza, the Alfa Romeo works team was the Scuderia's strongest opponent. In Monza, however , the Autodelta team management did not compete. The entire weekend was characterized by adverse weather conditions. The qualification training already took place under heavy rain; with considerable consequences for the starting line-up. The organizer was concerned that slow vehicles on the racetrack could become a driving chicane for the fast 3-liter sports cars and therefore built in a qualification hurdle. In order to take part in the race, you had to stay within 20 seconds of pole position time. Since Ronnie Peterson achieved his fastest lap in a time of 1.24.750 minutes on a dry track, this hurdle became insurmountable for many teams that only started training in the rain. Peterson achieved an average speed of 244.248 km / h and was significantly faster than the fastest Formula 1 cars at the Italian Grand Prix in autumn 1972. However, the Formula 1 monoposti had to pass two new chicanes, which reduced the lap times and average speeds have been significantly reduced. Jacky Ickx in the Formula 1 Ferrari 312B2 achieved a time of 1.35.650 minutes, which corresponds to an average of 217.355 km / h.
The race on Saturday was also heavily influenced by the rain. Three vehicles - including the Scuderia-Filipinetti - Lola T290 - failed in the initial phase because moisture had penetrated the electrical system. More than half a dozen cars were broken down in accidents. Only six teams came into the ranking. Jacky Ickx celebrates his fourth World Championship victory in a row; this time Clay Regazzoni was his teammate. Reinhold Joest and Gerhard Schüler in a Porsche 908/03 were second, four laps behind .
