Walter Brun (born October 20, 1942 in Lucerne ) is a former Swiss automobile racing driver and racing team owner.
Life
After finishing school, Brun started his career as a civil servant at Swiss Post . He only performed this activity for a short time. As early as 1963 he went into business for himself with the installation and lending of gaming machines ; later he also ran a discotheque , a car and champagne dealership in Lucerne. In 1966 Brun began his motorsport career as a driver in various mountain , sports car and touring car races . In the 1970s he was closely associated with the Schnitzer Motorsport team . In 1982 he founded his own racing team with Brun Motorsport , and in 1988 he finally got into Formula 1 together with Euroracing . The badly managed team EuroBrun Racing failed after three years. The high financial outlay associated with Formula 1 involvement led to an end to all motorsport activities of Brun Motorsport AG a little later. In 1992 the company was dissolved after bankruptcy . Walter Brun worked off the debts of his former Formula 1 team for a decade; In 2002 he was debt free.
Brun has been linked to illegal business several times. In 1984 he was briefly imprisoned on suspicion of pimping ; five years later he was in business contact with Joachim Lüthi, who had embezzled investor funds amounting to 200 million Swiss francs and invested part of it in the Brabham Formula 1 team . In 1990 Brun finally paid a bill for his Formula 1 team with counterfeit money.
Today Brun runs a restaurant in Stans and is a pianist and saxophonist in the Swinging Boys music group , with whom he claims to have around 100 live performances per year.
Motorsport career
After more than a decade and a half as a racing driver, Walter Brun founded his own motorsport team in 1982. He took over the German racing team GS-Tuning from Gundelfingen, which was in financial difficulties, and renamed it Brun Motorsport . With this team he entered the German Touring Car Championship in 1984 . In a BMW 635 CSi , Brun scored 44 points and was thirteenth at the end of the season. After only one year he left the DTM to turn back to sports cars and later prototypes . At the same time, he unsuccessfully operated his three-year Formula 1 commitment. In 2003 he ended his motorsport career.
From 1971 to 2003 he competed 14 times in the Le Mans 24-hour race . His best place was fourth overall in 1984, which he achieved together with Leopold Prinz von Bayern and Bob Akin in a Porsche 956 B. On his debut in 1971, he achieved seventh place overall in a Porsche 907 from the Swiss Wicky Racing Team and won the class for prototypes up to 2 liters. In 2009 Brun contested his last race as an active racing driver as a guest starter in the ADAC GT Masters for the Callaway Competition team at the Lausitzring .
