The 1988 World Sports Car Championship was the 36th season of this championship. It started on March 6th and ended on November 20th.

championship

In 1988 the point allocation in the drivers and manufacturers' world championships was changed. The sprint races, which had a race distance of 360 kilometers, kept the previous counting method. The points for the first ten were awarded as follows: 20-15-12-10-8-6-4-3-2-1. In the classic long-distance races , which were driven over a distance of 800 and 1000 kilometers, the world championship points were doubled. In the Le Mans 24-hour race , the values to be achieved increased by a further 50%. To get any points at all, 90% of the race distance of the winning team had to be covered in the respective races.

For the second time in a row, the Jaguar team led by Tom Walkinshaw won the sports prototype world championship, this time with a clear lead over the Swiss Sauber team . The six Jaguar successes contrasted with five Sauber victories. However, the British racing team benefited from the new sporting regulations through overall victories in the endurance races and the Le Mans race.

Jaguar driver Martin Brundle was world driver champion with 240 points and 32 points ahead of Sauber driver Jean-Louis Schlesser .
