John Colum Crichton-Stuart, 7th Marquess of Bute , called Johnny Dumfries or John Bute , (born April 26, 1958 in Rothesay , Scotland ) is a former British racing driver and Formula 1 driver . Until 1993 he carried the courtesy title of Earl of Dumfries .
Motorsport career
Dumfries began his motorsport career in various British junior formulas. To cover up his noble origins, he posed as a mediocre painter.
1983 Dumfries rose to the British Formula 3 Championship . A year later he won the British championship unchallenged in this class with 14 wins this season. In the Formula 3 European Championship, he was third overall.
In 1985 Dumfries signed a contract with Onyx for the Formula 3000 European Championship. After four races he switched to the Lola team, but was only able to achieve one European Championship point.
Despite the poor results, Dumfries found a cockpit in Formula 1 in the Lotus team in 1986 . He benefited from the fact that Ayrton Senna refused to accept the British Derek Warwick as the second driver in the team. Even if he had no chance against the up-and-coming Senna, Dumfries was able to achieve a total of three World Championship points in Hungary and Australia and take 13th place in the 1986 drivers' championship.
As the Lotus team in 1987 on Honda engines umstieg, had his place at Dumfries Satoru Nakajima cede. Since there was no vacancy in other teams either, Dumfries accepted a test driver contract with the Benetton team. With no prospect of continuing his Formula 1 career, he signed a contract with Tom Walkinshaw's Jaguar team for the World Sports Car Championship .
It was there in 1988 that Johnny Dumfries celebrated the greatest success of his racing career. With his teammates Andy Wallace and Jan Lammers , he won the Le Mans 24-hour race . In 1991 he ended his racing career.
Private life
In 1993, on the death of his father, he inherited the title of Marquess of Bute and became a member of the House of Lords . Due to the reforms of the House of Lords Act 1999 , he lost his hereditary parliamentary seat in November 1999. His family home is Mount Stuart House . He was ranked 616 on the 2008 Sunday Times Rich List with an estimated fortune of around £ 125 million. He is married for the second time and has a total of four children.
