Reports
background
For the first time a Formula 1 race took place in one of the so-called Eastern Bloc countries . An estimated 380,000 spectators visited the circuit during the weekend. The race alone was watched by around 200,000 spectators.
Within the Arrows team, the two regular drivers swapped their cars so that Christian Danner took the new A9 and Thierry Boutsen used the A8 . At Minardi , a copy of the new M186 was launched for the first time. Andrea de Cesaris drove the car.
training
Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position for the sixth time in the 1986 season . Nelson Piquet , Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell followed directly behind, so that the leading drivers in the World Championship started the race from the first four starting positions.
run
Senna defended his top position at the start. Mansell overtook Prost and Piquet, with the latter successfully countering before the end of the first lap. During the first six laps, Patrick Tambay and Alan Jones, both Lola pilots, were among the top six .
On the twelfth lap, Piquet took the lead. Senna followed before Prost and Mansell. Keke Rosberg was sixth ahead of Johnny Dumfries .
On lap 16 Prost headed for the pit due to an electrical problem. As his team-mate Rosberg drove into the pit lane almost simultaneously to have his tires changed, the Finn lost time and thus his fifth position. He came back on track in ninth place and Prost last. In the 23rd round the French retired.
Piquet lost the lead to Senna with a pit stop. He gained a sufficient lead so that after his pit stop a few laps later he was initially able to defend the lead. However, Piquet was right behind him and overtook him on lap 57. From then on, the two Brazilians dueled for victory, with Piquet staying ahead. Nigel Mansell crossed the finish line in third, ahead of Stefan Johansson , Johnny Dumfries and Martin Brundle .
Due to the rule that was already in effect at the time that a Grand Prix may last a maximum of two hours, the race was stopped one lap before the planned end.
In the World Championship standings, the four favorites Mansell, Senna, Piquet and Prost were only eleven points apart after the race.
