The 1986 German Grand Prix took place on July 27th at the Hockenheimring and was the tenth race of the 1986 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
His compatriot Philippe Alliot was hired to replace Jacques Laffite , who had broken his legs two weeks earlier in the course of an accident at the British Grand Prix .
At Arrows , a copy of the new Arrows A9 was used for the first time. The car was driven by Thierry Boutsen , while Christian Danner continued to drive the A8 .
training
Shortly after Keke Rosberg announced his retirement from Formula 1 at the end of the season, he qualified for pole position ahead of his teammate Alain Prost . Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger formed the second row in front of the two Williams drivers Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell .
run
Senna initially took the lead ahead of Berger. The two McLaren drivers dropped to third and fifth. Stefan Johansson collided with Philippe Alliot, as a result of which both drivers had to head for the pit to have repairs carried out. Teo Fabi , who was also involved in the accident, dropped out.
On the second lap, Rosberg overtook both Berger and Senna and took the lead. One lap later, Piquet also got past the two into second place. In the sixth lap he took the lead. Prost followed in third place in front of Senna and Mansell. The latter struggled with handling problems and was relegated to seventh place by René Arnoux on the seventh lap .
Piquet had his tires changed twice in the pits and therefore had to give up the lead to the two McLaren drivers for several laps on both lap 15 and lap 27, with Rosberg being ahead of Prost for most of the time. From lap 39, Piquet finally led the race.
On the final lap, both McLaren drivers retired due to a lack of fuel. Prost stopped a few meters from the finish, whereupon he tried to push his car over the finish line, with loud cheers from the audience, but he did not succeed. Senna, Mansell and Arnoux benefited from this by finishing in second to fourth place. The fact that Piquet and Senna also had only a minimum of gasoline in the tank could be seen from the fact that they drove clear serpentine lines for the last few meters in order to pump the last drops of fuel into the gasoline pump by means of centrifugal force. Rosberg and Prost were classified as fifth and sixth due to the distance they covered.
