The 1990 German Grand Prix took place on July 29th at the Hockenheimring and was the ninth race of the 1990 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
In the run-up to the race, there was confusion about Jean Alesi's future . Despite his contract with Tyrrell, he had signed for the 1991 season with both Ferrari and Williams .
The engine manufacturer Subaru stopped its Formula 1 involvement after missing eight pre-qualifications. Coloni then switched to Ford Cosworth .
training
Halfway through the season, the results from the first half of the year were used to determine which teams would henceforth take part in the pre-qualification. There was no improvement in their situation for AGS , Osella , EuroBrun , Coloni and Life . Larrousse, on the other hand, benefited from the Ligier downgrade .
The first three rows were each formed by two teammates, namely Ayrton Senna and Gerhard Berger ( McLaren ) in front of Alain Prost and Nigel Mansell (Ferrari) and Riccardo Patrese and Thierry Boutsen (Williams).
run
In the back of the field there was a starting accident because the clutch on Stefano Modena's car failed. Michele Alboreto and David Brabham had to swerve abruptly to avoid colliding with the stationary vehicle. Brabham collided with Emanuele Pirro's car , the rear wheel of which was torn off and thrown through the air. It hit the pit wall, bounced back from there and narrowly missed Philippe Alliot . Pirro's car also hit the pit wall. Alliot's car had to be pushed again by marshals. The Frenchman was later disqualified because of this unauthorized use of outside help.
Despite a better start, Berger couldn't take the lead from Senna. In the first six positions there were no changes of position during the first two laps. Then Boutsen fell back to tenth place due to a transmission problem. Patrese, who placed fifth, was followed by the two Benetton pilots Nelson Piquet and Alessandro Nannini . In the course of an attempt to overtake Patrese, Piquet had to drive into a run-off zone on the eleventh lap and thereby fell behind Nannini. As a result of a driving error in the east curve , Mansell damaged the underbody of his car. He made it back to his pits, but had to give up the race there.
With a pit stop by Senna, who had been in the lead up to that point, Nannini took the lead on lap 34 after battling Patrese for this position. He also went to the pits shortly afterwards, so that Piquet was in third place behind Senna and ahead of Berger. He was eliminated five laps later due to an engine failure.
Due to deteriorating tires, Nannini, who completed the race without changing tires in the meantime, was unable to maintain his lead over Senna. The Brazilian overtook him on lap 34 and won. Third behind Nannini was Berger, followed by Prost, Patrese and Boutsen, who for the first and only time in his Formula 1 career posted the fastest race lap.
