Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the British Grand Prix two weeks earlier also competed in Hockenheim.
training
Since it was raining during the second qualifying session on Saturday, none of the drivers except Alex Caffi could beat the fastest lap time he achieved on Friday. Around half of the drivers decided not to take part in the second round at all due to the weather conditions.
Nigel Mansell secured his sixth pole position in race eight ahead of Ayrton Senna , Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet . Michele Alboreto and Thierry Boutsen qualified for the third row ahead of Andrea de Cesaris and Stefan Johansson .
run
As a result of a comparatively bad start by the pole setter, Senna initially took the lead. Mansell finished the first lap around a second behind the Brazilian, but passed him at the beginning of the second lap. Senna was significantly slower and thereupon noticeably stopped the following pilots. Prost overtook him shortly afterwards, Piquet followed one lap later.
On the seventh lap, Prost passed Mansell and took the lead. When the French had new tires fitted in the pit on lap 19, Mansell took the lead again, but lost this position four laps later when he made a pit stop. Two laps later he retired due to an engine failure, which meant that his team-mate Piquet took second place. Since Senna had to go to the pits several times due to technical problems and Boutsen was eliminated due to an engine failure, Johansson was in third place at this point.
Four laps before the end of the race, Prost had to give up due to a defective alternator and leave Piquet the victory he believed to be certain. The Frenchman was classified in seventh place due to the distance he had covered. Johansson finished second even though his right front tire burst on the last lap and he had to cross the finish line on three wheels. Third place went to Senna. The remaining World Championship points went to Philippe Streiff , Jonathan Palmer and Philippe Alliot , which was partly due to the fact that only seven drivers made it to the finish line. The last one was Martin Brundle , who, however, was not counted because he was ten laps behind the winner.
