Reports
background
Because of the low number of participants in some of the previous races this season, the organizers of the German Grand Prix decided to organize a joint race for Formula 1 and Formula 2 racing cars. This had already been practiced a few years before so that the spectators at the 22.8 km long racetrack, on which only 14 laps were driven, did not have to take too long breaks until the field of almost equally powerful cars came up again, and more Vehicles were seen.
When the Ferrari Formula 1 team canceled its participation in the race at short notice, the measure turned out to be a sensible decision.
Apart from Ferrari's non-participation, the list of participants for the Formula 1 cars largely corresponded to that of the last race in Great Britain two weeks earlier. Jack Brabham , up to now a regular driver of his team, had to take a break due to an injury. Mario Andretti joined the Lotus factory team in place of John Miles and drove the Lotus 63 all-wheel-drive vehicle that was being tested .
training
On the first day of training, Gerhard Mitter , one of the twelve registered participants in Formula 2, had a fatal accident in the area of the “airfield” section. His team mates Hubert Hahne and Dieter Quester as well as his close friend Hans Herrmann then decided not to start, so that in the end eight Formula 2 cars supplemented the Formula 1 field of 14 vehicles.
Brabham driver Jacky Ickx secured pole position in front of Jackie Stewart in the Matra MS80 . With the Lotus 49, Jochen Rindt completed a first row consisting of three different vehicles. The second row, consisting of two cars, was shared by Joseph Siffert and Denis Hulme . The reigning world champion Graham Hill finished ninth on the grid, Mario Andretti only drove the twelfth best practice time with the all-wheel drive Lotus.
run
John Surtees withdrew from the start because he found his BRM P139 too unsafe due to problems with the wheel suspension on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, which at that time was still characterized by several small jumps and bumps .
After a relatively bad start, Jacky Ickx was overtaken by Stewart, Siffert, Rindt and five other competitors in the first few meters. In the first lap Andretti underestimated the weight of his fully fueled Lotus 63 at one of the jump crests and crashed, but remained uninjured. Moments later, Vic Elford recognized a wheel lying on the track that had been torn from Andretti's Lotus too late and collided with it. His car took off, overturned, and landed backwards between the trees and bushes on the side of the road. Elford retained consciousness but was unable to break free. He heard that the fuel pump of his fully fueled racing car had not switched off automatically and therefore feared an explosion. Andretti rushed to help immediately, switched off the pump and freed Elford, who got away relatively lightly with an arm broken three times.
Within two laps, Ickx fought his way back to second behind Stewart, where he held the next four laps until he finally overtook him on the seventh lap. At first Stewart was able to maintain the pace of the now leader, but soon fell behind with transmission problems, so that in the end Jacky Ickx won with an advantage of almost a minute over Stewart. Bruce McLaren finished third and was around two and a half minutes behind second. Graham Hill finished fourth around four minutes after the winner.
