The 1969 Grand Prix of Great Britain took place at Silverstone on July 19 and was the sixth race of the 1969 Automobile World Championship .
Reports
background
The development of all-wheel drive Formula 1 cars reached its peak. Four such vehicles were entered for the British Grand Prix, namely two Lotus 63s , a Matra MS84 and a McLaren M9A . However, the occupation of these vehicles changed several times over the weekend, as hardly any driver was satisfied with the driving behavior and the training results of the vehicles.
The BRM factory team Owen Racing Organization , which had skipped the French Grand Prix two weeks earlier due to disagreements within the company, returned after some restructuring with Tim Parnell as the new team manager. Among other things, the private team Reg Parnell Racing , which had contested the first three world championship rounds of this season with BRM vehicles, was dissolved. The freed driver Pedro Rodríguez now occupied a second Ferrari cockpit alongside Chris Amon . The now modified BRM P139 was reported for John Surtees , while his teammate Jackie Oliver continued to drive the P133 .
Jack Brabham was sidelined due to an injury. The planned representation by Dan Gurney failed at short notice, so that Jacky Ickx drove the only factory Brabham.
The private driver Joakim Bonnier competed for the first time this season.
training
Jackie Stewart , who led the world championship standings by a wide margin, went into the race weekend as the favorite. In Saturday's practice, however, he had a serious accident in which his car was badly damaged. He then took over his teammate Jean-Pierre Beltoise's car for the rest of the weekend , so that he had to be content with the immature MS84 all-wheel-drive vehicle.
Jochen Rindt drove the fastest training time ahead of Stewart and Denis Hulme . Jacky Ickx and Chris Amon qualified for the second row, so that five different vehicles were represented on the first five grid positions.
The reigning world champion Graham Hill only qualified for twelfth starting position and insisted on starting the race with a rear-wheel drive Lotus 49 . However, since the works team had only intended the Lotus 63 for him, Joakim Bonnier, who was competing in a private Lotus 49, was persuaded to swap his car for Hill's four-wheel drive vehicle.
run
Jackie Stewart took the lead, but could not repeat the dominance of the previous French GP at first, as Jochen Rindt was equal to him for large parts of the race this time. Rindt only lost connection towards the end due to an unscheduled pit stop, so that Stewart was ultimately undisputed again with one lap ahead of Jacky Ickx and Bruce McLaren and scored his fifth victory in the sixth run.

1 Graham Hill and Joakim Bonnier swapped their cars after practice, so that Hill contested the race with Bonnier's Lotus 49B and Bonnier drove the Lotus 63 that was actually registered for Hill.
2 Jackie Stewart only drove the number 30 Matra MS84 in the first practice session. After an accident in the second training session in which the MS80, which was also reported for him, was damaged, he used the MS80 of his team-mate Jean-Pierre Beltoise from then on.
3 Jean-Pierre Beltoise only drove the Matra MS80 in practice, then passed it on to his team-mate Jackie Stewart and did the decisive qualifying lap and the race with the MS84.
