The 1987 British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on July 12 and was the seventh race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

An unchanged field of participants compared to the French Grand Prix , which had taken place the previous weekend, entered the seventh World Championship round of the year in Silverstone.

The track had been modified with a tight S-curve in front of the Woodcote curve. The chicane, which was previously located within the Woodcote curve, was removed in return or integrated into the entrance to the pit lane.

training

The team-internal duel at Williams , which had shaped the previous races, was also continued in Great Britain, with Nelson Piquet securing pole position just ahead of Nigel Mansell . Behind them, Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost shared the second row in front of the two Benetton drivers Thierry Boutsen and Teo Fabi and the two Ferraris of Michele Alboreto and Gerhard Berger .

As a result of several rule violations during the training sessions, Piercarlo Ghinzani was excluded from participating in the race.

run

Although he got off to a better start, Prost was only able to take the lead for a few meters. Piquet passed him again in the second corner, closely followed by Mansell.

Piquet led the race ahead of his British team-mate until the third to last lap. Then, motivated by the cheers and cheers from the local spectators, he passed him on the Stowe curve and won. He was then unable to complete the run-out lap because all of his fuel was used up.

Ayrton Senna was third in front of his teammate Satoru Nakajima as well as Derek Warwick and Teo Fabi.
