Reports
background
As Zakspeed was the last of the participating teams to expand its involvement with Huub Rothengatter to two vehicles, only two-car teams were entered for the Imola race, which was still quite unusual at the time and only became standard in the course of the following years.
Alan Jones drove a new Lola THL2 car , which was the first to have a Cosworth turbo engine . His team mate Patrick Tambay initially continued to compete in the THL1 with a Hart engine.
training
For the third time in a row, the starting order in the first three places was Ayrton Senna, ahead of Nelson Piquet and Nigel Mansell . The reigning world champion Alain Prost qualified for fourth place on the grid ahead of Michele Alboreto and Keke Rosberg .
run
Piquet initially took the lead from Senna, while Mansell fell behind the two McLaren drivers Prost and Rosberg due to an engine problem . In the fourth lap, both McLaren overtook Senna. Rosberg also overtook his team-mate Prost and was therefore in second place.
After Senna's technical failure on lap twelve, Michele Alboreto was in fourth place ahead of René Arnoux , Teo Fabi and Gerhard Berger .
On the 29th lap, Rosberg took the lead. Since Prost's pit stop was a little faster than the Finn's, the Frenchman took over the top position from the 33rd lap and defended it until the finish. Piquet, who was in third place after the pit stops, had to save gas and be careful not to be overtaken by Alboreto, who was closely following him. However, this retired shortly before the end of the race due to a turbocharger damage. Because Rosberg ran out of fuel two laps before the end of the race, Piquet finished second ahead of Berger, who in turn benefited from Riccardo Patreses' retirement due to a lack of fuel . Stefan Johansson finished fourth. Rosberg and Patrese were ranked fifth and sixth due to the distance they covered.
