The 1985 San Marino Grand Prix took place on May 5th at the Autodromo Dino Ferrari and was the third race of the 1985 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Minardi started with turbo engines from the manufacturer Motori Moderni . Thus Tyrrell remained the only team that still used conventional naturally aspirated engines.

training

Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position for the second time in a row. His teammate Elio de Angelis followed in third place behind Keke Rosberg and in front of Michele Alboreto . Thierry Boutsen convinced as fifth fastest of the training in front of Alain Prost , Nigel Mansell and Niki Lauda . Nelson Piquet, the first of the drivers equipped with Pirelli tires, only followed in ninth place .

run

As in Portugal two weeks earlier, the two Lotus pilots had a one-two lead after just a few meters . Alboreto followed before Prost and Rosberg, which started again poorly. In the sixth lap, Lauda took fifth place.

On the tenth lap, de Angelis was overtaken by Alboreto. The two McLaren drivers followed within the next seven laps. When Alboreto fell back on lap 23 due to an electrical damage and finally had to retire, Prost and Lauda initially seemed to be the most promising pursuit of the leader Senna. However, when Lauda spun on lap 24, de Angelis came back to third, followed by Stefan Johansson . He managed to overtake all four opponents in front of him within eight laps and to take the lead on the 57th lap. However, this was aided by the fact that Senna had left shortly before due to a lack of fuel. A little later, however, the same fate befell Johansson, so that his lead only lasted one lap.

Prost led the race in the closing stages from de Angelis and Boutsen. He too had to struggle with a lack of fuel and stopped a few meters behind the finish line. For the same reason, Boutsen's engine already failed on the last lap, leaving him only able to roll towards the goal and unsure whether he would make it. His car finally stopped exactly on the finish line. However, since this was sufficient to trigger the electronic pulse generator for the time measurement, his last lap was considered to have ended normally.

After the race, Prost was disqualified because an inspection in the parc fermé revealed that his car was two kilograms too light. Elio de Angelis was thus declared the winner. Thierry Boutsen took second place in front of Patrick Tambay , Niki Lauda, Nigel Mansell and Stefan Johannson, who was classified as sixth due to the distance covered.
