report
background
It's the 100th race for Mika Häkkinen . Ferrari adapted the "X-Wings" from Tyrrell and only used it in this race, as these wings were declared illegal the day after the race.
training
Friday training
Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time in the first session of the race weekend with 1: 27.617 ahead of his team-mate Coulthard. Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher follow behind.
All drivers were placed within five seconds.
Saturday training
This time Coulthard was the faster of the two McLaren, Häkkinen had to admit defeat by almost a second.
With the exception of Jarno Trulli, who was around 18 seconds behind, all drivers were placed within seven seconds.
Qualifying
The special aerodynamics and Bridgestone tires will benefit the McLarens this weekend: Coulthard took pole position in front of his team-mate Häkkinen, followed by Michael Schumacher, Irvine and Alexander Wurz.
All drivers were placed within five and a half seconds.
Warm-up
Coulthard was the fastest with 1: 28.085, around one and a half seconds ahead of Mika Salo in the Arrows.
All drivers were placed within six seconds.
run
The race was relatively unspectacular, at the start Magnussen collided with Barrichello. The Dane got a new front wing in the pits, while Barrichello turned and had to give up without a rear wing. Just eight laps later, Magnussen also had to retire. Because of the accident, the first rumors of Magnussen's planned dismissal emerged. Alexander Wurz could not defend his good fifth place on the grid because he had a bad start. The reason, however, was not due to a driving error, but rather to transmission problems that forced him to give up 19 laps later. Also with transmission problems, Häkkinen had to give up on lap 17 when he wanted to make a pit stop. On the same lap, Fisichella suffered a serious accident but got away with no major injuries.
Towards the end of the race, Coulthard, who was the leader of the race at the time, had problems with the oil temperature. This forced him to go slower than usual for the last three laps, but that didn't prevent his victory. With Tuero in eighth place, Minardi was able to achieve a sensational top ten result. It should be noted, however, that only nine drivers made it to the finish, or only eleven drivers were rated.
