The 1997 San Marino Grand Prix (officially XVII Gran Premio di San Marino ) took place on April 27 at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola and was the fourth race of the 1997 Formula 1 World Championship . Heinz-Harald Frentzen took first place ahead of Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine .
report
background
The race was the 100th for Johnny Herbert and the 200th for Gerhard Berger .
Before the weekend, Jacques Villeneuve criticized the, in his opinion, stupid rule changes for 1998 and the hypocritical security craze in Imola. He said, "after Senna's misfortune, the conversion [of the Tamburello curve] was politically necessary - because of Roland Ratzenberger, who was very much closer to me as a friend from Japan, nobody would have done anything!"
training
In practice, all teams except the Ferraris and Benettons had problems and often spun off the track.
Friday training
On the first day of training Eddie Irvine was able to get the best time with a 1: 25.981. His team-mate Michael Schumacher was only 16 thousandths behind . The two Williams were about half a second behind. The only one over 1:30 was Jarno Trulli in the Minardi . All drivers were together within five seconds.
Saturday training
The Williams were able to overcome their problems and were able to prove their dominance again as Heinz-Harald Frentzen was able to secure the fastest time ahead of Jacques Villeneuve . The two were the only ones who achieved a time below 1:24. The day's best Irvine was sixth, around one and a half seconds behind Frentzen. All cars were within five seconds.
Qualifying
Villeneuve easily took pole position in front of his team-mate Frentzen. Ukyo Katayama almost failed to qualify for the race because of the 107 percent rule.
Warm-up
In the warm-up, Frentzen was again at the front, while Villeneuve was eighth place behind his team-mate a full one and a half seconds.
run
Jarno Trulli was unable to start due to transmission problems and Damon Hill had to start from the pit lane.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen celebrated his first victory after Michael Schumacher had to make a late pit stop. Jacques Villeneuve had to give up while in the lead due to a transmission problem.
