All drivers were within three seconds.
Saturday training
This session was dominated by the Williams , who set the fastest time with Heinz-Harald Frentzen , as well as, just seven hundredths behind, placed the second car with Jacques Villeneuve . Schumacher had to admit defeat by six tenths.
All drivers were within four and a half seconds.
Qualifying
Schumacher was able to prevail against his rival for the championship and set the fastest time with 1: 14.672. Damon Hill surprisingly qualified for third place.
All drivers were placed within three and a half seconds.
Warm-up
Again Schumacher set the best time of the session with 1: 16.996, Villeneuve was four tenths behind.
All drivers were placed within four seconds.
run
Hill got away best at the start and was able to overtake Villeneuve while Schumacher was able to maintain his lead. Hill caught up with Schumacher on lap six and overtook him five laps later. He now led the field with a lead of 35 seconds over Villeneuve.
It looked long after the first victory for the Arrows team, but with three laps to go the drama began: The hydraulic pump failed, causing the transmission to get stuck in third gear and the accelerator pedal not working properly. He lost a lot of time and was only overtaken by Villeneuve on the last lap. Hill was able to save his badly battered Arrows to second place.
After the race, it was found that the throttle linkage, which costs less than a dollar, failed.
