Reports
background
The same field of participants that had contested the European Grand Prix two weeks earlier also took part in the fourth World Championship round of the year in Imola.
In the run-up to the race, Ayrton Senna tried to convince the engine manufacturer Cosworth to deliver better engines to McLaren in the future and thus to give up the preference for Benetton . He justified this with his clearly better points balance compared to the two Benetton drivers Michael Schumacher and Riccardo Patrese after the first three races of the year. Benetton successfully prevented Senna's wish from being implemented. Only shortly before the start of the first training session did he appear at the racetrack after he had decided to take part in the race weekend despite the failure of his request.
training
The two Williams drivers Alain Prost and Damon Hill qualified for the front row ahead of Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna. Karl Wendlinger and Michael Andretti formed the third row.
run
On race day it started to rain around noon. Although it stopped a little later, the start took place in wet track conditions.
Hill took the lead from Senna, Prost and Schumacher. Mark Blundell and Riccardo Patrese retired during the first lap due to independent accidents in the area of the Tosa curve. On the seventh lap, Prost passed Senna. Shortly afterwards, the track was so dry that most of the pilots had slicks fitted to the box . A faster pit stop compared to Prost brought Senna back to second place. Hill lost a large part of his lead through a comparatively long pit stop.
On the twelfth lap, Prost overtook both Senna and Hill on the Tosa curve and thus took the lead. Senna passed Hill too. With his retirement due to a brake defect on lap 20, Schumacher came third. Wendlinger followed at this point in front of Andretti.
After 42 laps, Ayrton Senna had to retire due to hydraulic damage. Alain Prost won ahead of Michael Schumacher, Martin Brundle , JJ Lehto , Philippe Alliot and Fabrizio Barbazza .
