The 1993 Australian Grand Prix took place on November 7th as the 16th and final race of the 1993 Formula 1 World Championship on the Adelaide Street Circuit . Ayrton Senna celebrated his last Grand Prix victory in his last race with McLaren ; With Alain Prost and Riccardo Patrese , two greats in the sport also drove their last Formula 1 race.
Reports
background
The starting field remained unchanged compared to the previous race, the Japanese Grand Prix .
The Grand Prix was the last race of Alain Prost , who was already world champion, as well as Riccardo Patrese , whose 256 starts were a record at the time, and Derek Warwick . Ayrton Senna also ended his hugely successful time with McLaren .
Qualifying
Ayrton Senna managed to achieve pole position for the first time since the 1992 Canadian Grand Prix , despite his poorly motorized McLaren Ford . This was the only time in the 1993 season that Williams was not in the first starting position. Instead, the Williams drivers Prost and Damon Hill classified themselves in second and third place. Michael Schumacher also put his Benetton on the second row of the grid; behind it Senna's new teammate qualified Mika Hakkinen and Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Jean Alesi .
run
The race could only be started on the third attempt after first Ukyo Katayama and then Eddie Irvine stalled their engines. At the start the first positions remained the same, while Katayama collided with Pedro Lamy , who was eliminated as a result. Katayama and Irvine had to give up in quick succession after accidents a few laps later.
Senna drove a consistently controlled race from the front and only lost his lead after his first pit stop. Behind him, the Williams drivers drove consistently in second and third place, with Hills attacking his team-mate failing and ending in a spin for the Briton; however, he was able to keep the engine running and still finish third by a large margin. After Häkkinen and Schumacher had failed in a promising position with technical problems, Ferrari was also able to get both cars in the points one after the other; Alesi took third place ahead of Berger. Martin Brundle achieved the last point in the Ligier after Patrese retired in his last race two laps before the end with a problem with the fuel supply. JJ Lehto experienced a moment of shock on lap 56 , whose Sauber took off when driving over the steep curbs and failed.
With his 41st and final victory, Senna was able to push himself past Damon Hill into second place in the drivers' world championship. For McLaren, the victory, which was to remain the last until David Coulthard's victory at the Australian Grand Prix in 1997 , meant advancement to the designer with the most race wins of all time (104) past Ferrari.
At the awards ceremony, there was a remarkable scene when Senna brought his outgoing arch-rival to the first step of the podium and shook hands, ending the season with a slight reconciliation between the two brawlers.
