training
In free practice on Friday, Michael Schumacher set the fastest lap ahead of his teammates Barrichello and Coulthard. In Saturday's training, Mika Häkkinen took over the leadership position ahead of Michael Schumacher and Coulthard. Because of oil pressure problems, Heidfeld missed the morning session and the second Prost driver Jean Alesi spun several times during the training session.
Qualifying
In qualifying, Häkkinen achieved pole position in front of Michael Schumacher and Coulthard.
Warm up
In the warm-up there was a double lead of the McLaren drivers with Häkkinen in front of Coulthard. Michael Schumacher came in third.
run
At the start of the race, Häkkinen kept the lead from Michael Schumacher. The Ferrari driver got off to a bad start and had to defend himself against Coulthard. Before the Tamburello, Coulthard finally had to let Schumacher go. Barrichello used the situation to also drive past Coulthard. Jacques Villeneuve had a good start and moved up to fifth place. Jarno Trulli and Eddie Irvine lay behind him . After just a few laps, Frentzen and Jenson Button had to give up with technical problems, and Marc Gené after an accident.
At the top, a duel developed between Häkkinen and Michael Schumacher, who were able to set themselves apart from the rest of the field. Barrichello and Coulthard also formed a group of two who set themselves apart from the other drivers, but could not keep up with the leaders. While both Prost pilots had failed due to hydraulic damage, Häkkinen's lead over Schumacher stabilized at three seconds. Barrichello and Coulthard pitted at the same time, almost 25 seconds behind. Since Coulthard made a shorter stop, he managed to pass Barrichello. One lap later, the leading drivers came to the pits. Häkkinen made a shorter pit stop than Michael Schumacher and kept the lead. At the same time, Coulthard had a temporary technical problem and had to let Barrichello by again. A little later, however, the McLaren driver's lap times stabilized again.
Behind the first four drivers, Villeneuve, Ralf Schumacher and Mika Salo battled it out for fifth position. At the front, Häkkinen initially retained his lead, although he initially drove a little slower after a collision with a part of the wreck. Shortly before Häkkinen's second pit stop, Michael Schumacher initially managed to reduce the lead to two seconds before he lost more seconds due to traffic lapping. However, since his McLaren rival briefly had an electronics problem, he pitted on lap 44 with a lead of three seconds over Michael Schumacher.
On the next lap, Barrichello also made his second pit stop, while Ralf Schumacher retired with a loss of fuel pressure. At that time, Coulthard managed to take the position ahead of Barrichello with good sector times. While Pedro de la Rosa retired after an accident, Michael Schumacher's pit stop on the 49th lap made a preliminary decision about the Grand Prix victory. Since he had less fuel to fill up, his pit stop was shorter and he came back on track before Häkkinen. Shortly before the end of the race, Trulli had to retire in seventh place due to transmission problems.
Schumacher won the race ahead of Häkkinen with a lead of 1.168 seconds. With a clear gap of more than 50 seconds, Coulthard crossed the finish line in third place. However, he managed to distance Barrichello by about 40 seconds within the last laps. Villeneuve finished in fifth and Salo in sixth place, one lap behind.
In the world championship, Michael Schumacher and Ferrari were able to further expand their lead in the respective ratings.
