Empire of China : After the death of Han Emperor Ling in the summer of that year, a dispute arises between the faction of the eunuchs and the family of the widow He over the succession.
When He Jin , the brother of the Empress and Grand Marshal at the imperial court, learns of a conspiracy by the eunuchs against him, he appoints Liu Bian , the older son of the late emperor, as emperor. To eliminate the eunuchs led by Jian Shuo , He Jin conspires with officers Yuan Shao and Yuan Shu and kills Jian Shuo. The eunuch Zhang Rang takes over the leadership of the eunuch faction and ensures that the eunuchs are allowed to stay at court.
In the fall, General Dong Zhuo marched with his troops to the capital Luoyang to break the eunuchs' control over the imperial court. The eunuchs murder Grand Marshal He Jin and take the young emperor, his brother and their mother hostage. While the Empress Mother He is soon able to free herself, the eunuchs flee to the Yellow River with their sons . There they are caught by Dong Zhuo and collectively commit suicide.
Dong Zhuo brings the emperor and his brother back to the capital, where he defeats the city commanders Yuan Shu and Cao Cao and takes possession of the city. As soon as he considers his power to be secured, Dong Zhuo deposes the emperor and appoints his younger brother Liu Xie as emperor. Empress mother He committed suicide by poisoning that same year.
