Le Mans 24 hour race 1950

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ferrari 166MM
Ferrari 195 Sport Touring Berlinetta Le Mans, driven by Raymond Sommer and Dorino Serafini

The 18th 24-hour race at Le Mans , the 18 s Grand Prix d'Endurance les 24 Heures du Mans , and 24 Heures du Mans Circuit de la Sarthe, Le Mans , was held at from 24 to 25 June 1950 the Circuit des 24 Heures .

The race

In 1949 , the Automobile Club de l'Ouest was still worried that too few reports might be received for the 24-hour race, but in 1950 the organizer was surprised by the flood of inquiries. 112 teams, including the teams invited by the ACO, wanted to take part in the race. 60 were accepted by the officials. 26 different brands - from France, Great Britain, Italy, the USA and Czechoslovakia - were at the start. 33 cars came from France alone, including three Talbots , two Delahayes and one Delage . The French manufacturers were particularly well represented in the small classes. There were works teams from Deutsch et Bonnet , Gordini , Panhard and Monopole . In 1950 - as in the previous year - the Delettrez brothers' diesel racing car was there. Pierre Veyron received start number 1 for his MAP, which had a 5-liter diesel engine including a compressor .

The new Aston Martin DB2 and Jaguar XK 120 came from Great Britain . Sydney Allard rolled his Allard J2 to the start and the Donald Healey Motor Company appeared with a special version of the Healey Silverstone with a Nash engine. The oldest car on the starting line was a Bentley Mark V , built in 1934. Briggs Cunningham caused a sensation when he and his racing team came to Le Mans for the first time. The Collier brothers drove an almost unchanged Cadillac DeVille and Cunningham himself drove a prototype, which the audience dubbed “the monster”.

Top drivers like Juan Manuel Fangio , José Froilán González , Jean Behra , Peter Whitehead , Robert Manzon and Maurice Trintignant made their Le Mans debut in 1950.

The favorites to win were the two Ferraris of Peter Mitchell-Thomson, 2nd Baron Selsdon and Luigi Chinetti . The winning team last year, they both had other partners in 1950. Selsdon shared his 166MM with Jean Lucas . Chinetti's partner was Pierre Louis-Dreyfus . However, the sentimental favorite of the French media was Raymond Sommer , who contested his last Le Mans race.

As in all Le Mans races in which he was at the start, Raymond Sommer immediately stormed into the lead and was able to break away from the field by setting record laps. After two hours, however, his journey was over. An engine failure stopped the Ferrari 195 Sport Touring Berlinetta Le Mans . After three hours, Louis Rosier - who shared the cockpit with his son Jean-Louis - took over the lead of the race. The Rosiers' Talbot was a Grand Prix car that had been quickly turned into a sports car through a few modifications. Except for a brief period on the night when Guy Mairesse took first place, the Rosier-Talbot was always in charge. In the end, the Rosiers had one lap ahead of the Talbot from Mairesse / Meyrat. The two Rosiers also broke all existing Le Mans records. 22 years should pass before a French vehicle wins the 24-hour race again.
