Roman Empire

  • February 23 : After fifty years of tolerance, the Roman Emperor Diocletian issued an edict on the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire . It bans Christian worship, orders the destruction of churches and imprisonment of Christian state officials, and imposes the death penalty on all Christians who continue to  deny the imperial cult - the only religious act prescribed in Rome. The most violent wave of persecution in Roman history ensues.
