Europe
- April 30th : Restauratio imperii : The Ostrogoth King Theodahad , who had his cousin and Queen Amalasuntha arrested in Ravenna , has them strangled in the bath on Martana Island in Lake Bolseni . The Eastern Roman Emperor Justinian I took this as an opportunity to invade the Ostrogoth Empire, with which the Gothic War began: Theodahad's attempt to stop the war by sending the new Pope Agapitus I to Constantinople turned out to be unsuccessful. While Justinian's general Mundus conquered Salona in Dalmatia , but was otherwise not very successful, Belisarius succeeded in conquering Sicily with an elite troop of only 7,500 men and soon after landing at Naples .
- December 31 : The general Belisarius and his troops conquered Syracuse . This ends the rule of the Ostrogoths in Sicily , which now becomes part of the Eastern Roman Empire.
