Iberian Peninsula
- January 14th : Fruela I , King of Asturias , who himself recently murdered his brother, is murdered. His successor will not be his designated nephew Bermudo , but Fruela's cousin Aurelio .
Franconian Empire
- Before Easter: Pepin the Younger , King of the Franconian Empire , subjugates the Duchy of Aquitaine , which is subsequently administered directly by the Carolingians . Duke Waifar is murdered by his own people - presumably at Pippin's instigation. Pippin's son Karlmann becomes the new Duke of Aquitaine .
- June: On the way back from Aquitaine, Pippin falls seriously ill and decrees that after his death the empire should be divided between his two sons. He dies on September 24th in Saint-Denis near Paris.

- After a surprise attack by the Byzantine emperor Constantine V on the Bulgarian empire , its ruler Pagan is murdered by his own people while fleeing to Varna . Telerig succeeds him as Khan of the Bulgarians and ends a three-year period of anomie .
