- August 15 : After the Franks crossed the Pyrenees , destroyed Pamplona and besieged Saragossa (in vain), a fierce battle with the Basques broke out during the retreat . The Breton Margrave Hruotland is killed in the rearguard battle of Roncesvalles : his end becomes legend in the Roland song as a heroic defensive battle . The reason for the campaign were disputes between Abd ar-Rahman I of Córdoba and the governor of Saragossa, Ibn Arabi. The latter assures the Franks the position of hostages and territorial gains.
