Aaron Opoku-Tiawiah (born March 28, 1999 in Hamburg ) is a German soccer player . The winger was mainly trained by Hamburger SV and has been under contract with VfL Osnabrück as a loan player since the end of August 2021 .

Career

In the club

Born in Hamburg, Opoku has Ghanaian roots. He started playing soccer with the Hamburg gymnastics association in 1816 before moving to the Hamburger SV youth academy in 2011 . At HSV, Opoku went through all youth teams and played in the B-Junior and A-Junior Bundesliga , among others . In the 2017/18 season , his last season with the A-Juniors (U19), in which he was the captain with his team, which also included Fiete Arp , Josha Vagnoman , Jonas David and Ogechika Heil , placed 2nd in occupied the North / Northeast season, the winger scored 15 goals in 23 appearances. In March 2018, Opoku also played 3 appearances in the second men's team in the fourth-class Regionalliga Nord .

For the 2018/19 season , Opoku signed his first professional contract with a term until June 30, 2021 and moved up to the squad of the first team that had been relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga . At the same time he was in the squad of the second team. During the preparation, Opoku suffered a tension pneumothorax while warming up before a test match for the second team and had to undergo lung surgery. Almost 2 months later, Opoku was back in a competitive game for the second team. Neither under Christian Titz , under whom he had already played in the U17, nor under his successor Hannes Wolf , Opoku made it into the matchday squad in a second division game. Instead, he played a total of 9 times in the regional league until the winter break and scored one goal. Due to his good performance, Opoku completed the winter preparation again in the professional team. In the second half of the season Opoku was in some games of the professional team in the matchday squad, but was not substituted on. He came on 8 more missions in the Regionalliga, in which he scored a goal.

For the 2019/20 season, Opoku moved to third division Hansa Rostock for a year on loan . On matchday 1 he scored the goal of the month for July in a 3-3 draw against FC Viktoria Köln . Under head coach Jens Härtel , the winger was mostly part of the regular staff throughout the season. He played 33 league games (26 times from the start) in which he scored 5 goals. With an average score of 2.98, Opoku was the kicker behind Deniz Undav (SV Meppen; 2.67), top scorer Kwasi Okyere Wriedt (FC Bayern Munich II; 2.70), Sascha Mölders (TSV 1860 Munich; 2.90) and Marius Kleinsorge (SV Meppen; 2.95) rated the fifth best striker in the league.

For the 2020/21 season , Opoku returned to Hamburger SV, who had again missed promotion to the Bundesliga in 4th place in the previous season. Previously, his contract was extended until June 30, 2024. On the first two days of the match, the 21-year-old under Daniel Thioune only made a brief appearance and two appearances in the second team behind Manuel Wintzheimer , Sonny Kittel , Khaled Narey and Bakery Jatta . At the beginning of October 2020 he was therefore loaned to league competitor SSV Jahn Regensburg until the end of the season. There he could not prevail under the head coach Mersad Selimbegović . Opoku came to 21 second division games, but was only 6 times in the starting line-up and scored one goal. The managing director Christian Keller said about him after the end of the season: “Aaron was definitely born with a great talent. He was able to hint at this talent with us from time to time. Unfortunately not as consistent as we'd all hoped. He has to become aware of his superior talent potential and work hard to consistently bring this talent to the field in the form of quality. If he can do that, we will hear a lot more from him. "

For the 2021/22 season , Opoku returned to HSV, which was now coached by Tim Walter . Even Walter did not plan after the preparation with Opoku, who was not used in the first 4 league games and the first round of the DFB Cup and only played one regional league game. The 22-year-old then moved on loan to third division club VfL Osnabrück at the end of August 2021 until the end of the season .

In the national team

In April 2018, Opoku played once in the German U19 national team . Between March and November 2019 he was used 6 times for the U20 selection .

Game abandoned after racist insult

On December 19, 2021 Opoku was racially insulted by a spectator in the 33rd minute of the away game between VfL Osnabrück against MSV Duisburg after taking a corner kick . The referee Nicolas Winter said in an interview with Magenta Sport : “There was a corner kick for VfL Osnabrück and then monkey sounds from the stands. He noticed that immediately, and so did the assistant . Both of them described the process to me. ”As a result, a game was abandoned for the first time in German professional football due to a racist incident. VfL Osnabrück was unable to continue playing. According to the MSV press spokesman, Opoku was “ready and all” and the whole team “finished”. VfL managing director Michael Welling said: "Aaron is finished and was no longer able to play" and added that by not continuing to play, they wanted to document that they did not accept such behavior. The interior minister of Lower Saxony , Boris Pistorius , described the incident as "absolutely disgusting" and "ugly face of everyday racism in our country". According to the Duisburg police, criminal charges were filed against a 55-year-old suspect .

The following day, the clubs voted for a replay.
