Abdul Zahir

Sharifi Abdul Zahir (born May 3, 1910 - October 21, 1982 ) was Afghan Prime Minister during the reign of King Sahir Shah .

Zahir was born in Laghman Province . He attended high school in Kabul , studied medicine at Columbia University and has a Masters in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University . He became a doctor and returned to Afghanistan to practice, but ended up in politics. His political positions include, among others, health ministers, parliament speakers and ambassadors in Italy and Pakistan. From June 1971 to December 1972 he was Prime Minister of Afghanistan. A few months after resigning from this post, Abdul Zahir retired from politics.

Zahir was married to Quraisha and had four children. His son Ahmad Zahir was a popular musician. He later lived in Peshawar , Pakistan , where he initiated a campaign for peace in Afghanistan.
