Early history, naming and first mention

A first documented settlement took place on the Auhögl near Hammerau around 5000 BC. In the Neolithic ( Neolithic ).

In Roman times the trade route led from Iuvavum (Salzburg) to Augusta Vindelicum (Augsburg) through the municipality, roughly following the course of today's federal highway 304 .

Ainring was first mentioned in a document as "Ainheringa" in the Notitia Arnonis (written 788-790). Around 715, Duke Theodebert from the Agilolfinger family (ruled around 711–719) gave Ainring to the Nonnberg monastery in Salzburg . The place name is based on the personal name Einher and the affiliation suffix -ing . Accordingly, the Bavarian place name means "With the people of the hand".

Founding of the iron union

The founding of the private iron trade union Achthal-Hammerau in 1537 on the initiative of Salzburg's Archbishop Matthäus Lang von Wellenburg was historically and economically significant . The hammer mill of the iron trade union in Hammerau, in which the iron extracted in Achthal was processed, was located in the area of today's municipality. The Annahütte steelworks developed from the former hammer mill , today one of the most important employers in the community.

Secularization and the emergence of the community

Belonging to the Rupertiwinkel and thus to the Prince Archbishopric of Salzburg at the time , Ainring became part of the secularization as a result of the Reichsdeputationshauptschluss of 1803 under Ferdinand III. Part of the Electorate of Salzburg formed on December 26, 1802 and then came to the Austrian Empire in the Peace of Pressburg in 1805 . In 1809, in the Peace of Schönbrunn , the place finally fell to the Kingdom of Bavaria .

In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria, today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

time of the nationalsocialism

In today's district of Mitterfelden, an airfield was built in 1933, which served as Reichenhall-Berchtesgaden Airport , primarily for flights by the Nazi government to the Reich Chancellery Berchtesgaden . There was also an aeronautical research position there .

post war period

After the end of the Second World War , a DP camp for " Displaced Persons " was set up on the airfield . In 1947 the DP camp was closed and the inmates were transferred to the Lechfeld camp near Augsburg. After the camp was closed, refugees were housed in the barracks . The district of Mitterfelden emerged from the barracks settlement.

Territorial reform and resettlement

Until June 30, 1972, the place belonged to the district of Laufen , the southern part of which was merged with the district of Berchtesgaden and the independent city of Bad Reichenhall to form the new district of Bad Reichenhall in the course of the Bavarian regional reform on July 1, 1972 . On May 1, 1973, the district was given its current name " Landkreis Berchtesgadener Land ".

In 1978 the district of Bichlbruck , which had previously belonged to the municipality of Ainring, was reassigned to Piding .

Population development

Ainring is the third largest municipality in the Berchtesgadener Land district after the cities of Bad Reichenhall and Freilassing , but before the city of Laufen and the markets of Berchtesgaden and Teisendorf .

coat of arms

Ainring coat of arms
Blazon : “Divided by gold and black; a black hammer and a black mallet and a red-tongued black lion's head crossed diagonally at the top; below a gold ring with a silver stone. "
Justification of the coat of arms: The lion's head and the field colors gold and black refer to the over a thousand years of regional rule of the Archbishopric of Salzburg . Hammer and mallet, the so-called " Tough ", indicate the importance of the Hammerau ironworks . Finally, the ring is taken from the family coat of arms of the Ainring pastor Friedrich von Rüsenbach, who had the rectory built in 1532. The ring can also be interpreted as a naively speaking figure for the name "Ainring" .
