Life

Alfred Zacharias was the son of court photographer Rudolf Zacharias. He was born at 23 Oberen Bachgasse. His grandfather was the decorative painter Otto Zacharias sen. During his visit to the secondary school , Alfred Zacharias was strongly influenced by his art teacher , the painter and graphic artist Oskar Birckenbach . Alfred Zacharias studied at the Technical University in Munich and the local arts and crafts school . In 1930 he passed the state examination for teaching at secondary schools. From 1932 to 1966 he worked as a high school teacher for art education and as head of a study seminar in Munich. In 1938, Zacharias was awarded 2nd place in the Hans Schemm competition of the National Socialist Teachers' Association (NSLB) for the children's book “Der Bauernzorn” . Zacharias had lived in Gauting with his family since 1934 . The community awarded him the Günther-Klinge-Kulturpreis in 1992 .

Alfred Zacharias worked alongside his teaching activities as a graphic designer ; he was particularly active in the field of woodcut and illustrated numerous books. He also wrote his own literary works.

His marriage to the Düsseldorf-based art teacher and watercolorist Irmgard Zacharias resulted in three children: the artist and university professor Thomas , the art and culture teacher Wolfgang and the painter Veronika Zacharias.
