All My Loving ( English ; "My whole love") is a song by the British band The Beatles from 1963. The song was composed by Paul McCartney , but it is under the Beatles' usual copyright Lennon / McCartney . The song was released for the first time on the second Beatles album With the Beatles .

background

Basically, All My Loving was the first high point among the McCartney compositions. The song was composed in May 1963 during a Beatles tour with Roy Orbison . McCartney first wrote the text, which was unusual for him. He composed the music in the backstage area of a concert hall on a piano that was parked there because he did not have a guitar to hand.

All My Loving quickly became an integral part of the Beatles' live repertoire and was also the first song the band played on February 9, 1964 on the Ed Sullivan Show in New York , to an estimated 73 million viewers.

John Lennon , who became increasingly disparaging about McCartney's compositions after the separation of the Beatles, regretted in an interview in 1980 that he had not written All My Loving because it was “a damn good piece of work” (“A damn good piece of work ”).

admission

The Beatles recorded All My Loving on July 30, 1963 at Abbey Road Studios in London . The producer was George Martin , assisted by Norman Smith . The band recorded a total of eleven takes of All My Loving , with three additional overdubs recorded on the latter . On August 21, 1963 a mono mix was made; a stereo mix on October 29, 1963 .

In addition to the studio version, the Beatles recorded four other versions of All My Loving for BBC Radio under live conditions . The recording, which was made for this on February 28, 1964 and aired on March 30, 1964 in the program From Us To You , appeared in 1994 on the album Live at the BBC .

A live recording, which was made on August 23, 1964 in the American amphitheater Hollywood Bowl ( Los Angeles ), appeared in 1977 on the Beatles' only official live album, The Beatles at the Hollywood Bowl .

publication

All My Loving appeared on the Beatles album With the Beatles on November 22, 1963 . A single was not released in either the UK or the United States . However, British DJ David Jacobs began playing it repeatedly on the radio, after which the song received more attention. However, it appeared in both countries on EP , in Great Britain on February 7, 1964 on the EP All My Loving , in the USA on May 11, 1964 on the EP Four by the Beatles . Despite not being released as a single in the US, All My Loving reached number 45 on the Billboard Hot 100 there , as the single was imported from neighboring Canada , where it was a number one hit. In Germany , All My Loving was also released as a single and reached number 32 in the German single charts .

Cover versions

Cover versions of All My Loving have been published continuously since 1964 , including versions by Alvin and the Chipmunks , Herb Alpert , Jim Sturgess , Helloween , Fancy , Emilie Autumn and Amy Winehouse . A handful of cover versions reached chart positions; for example, a 1967 ballad version by Johnny Young was a top 10 hit in Australia . Herb Alpert's instrumental version also served as the signature tune for the WDR-2 radio broadcast Quintessenz until the 1990s .

Paul McCartney included the song in his concert program and two live versions were released. The first appeared on the Paul Is Live album in 1993 , the second on the Back in the US album in 2002.
