Allison Schmitt (born June 7, 1990 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American swimmer who won the 200 m freestyle title at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . She has won medals several times in previous Olympic tournaments, as well as world championships and pan-Pacific championships .

Life

Schmitt was born in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ( United States ) in 1990 . She is the daughter of a German-American financial analyst and a project manager . She graduated from Canton High School in Michigan in 2008 and was swimming for the Wolverine Club in Ann Arbor , where Michael Phelps also trained , during her senior year .

She then began studying at the University of Georgia , where she is currently studying psychology . From 2009 to 2011 she was a swimmer for the Georgia Bulldogs team for the National Collegiate Athletic Association , a volunteer association organized across many colleges and universities in the USA . She won the national championships of this association four times: from 2009 to 2011 over 500 meters freestyle , in 2010 also over 200 meters freestyle. In the following years she was no longer part of the team as she was preparing for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London with her coach Bob Bowman and the North Baltimore Aquatic Club .

Career

She first attracted attention in 2007 when she finished fourth in the 800 meter freestyle at the Japan Invitational . At the Junior Pan Pacific Championships in the same year she won bronze in the 200 meters and 100 meters freestyle. She took part in the Summer Olympics for the first time in Beijing in 2008 , when she was part of the relay that won bronze in the 4 × 200 meter freestyle. Since she was only ninth in the semi-finals over 200 meters freestyle, however, she missed her first participation in the final. At the 2009 World Swimming Championships in Rome , she competed in three competitions. She swam the second best time in the 400 meter freestyle with 4: 02.80. With a time improved by 30 milliseconds, she finally came fourth in the final. In the final of the 200 meter freestyle she finished second behind Federica Pellegrini , but still achieved a new American record. In the 4 × 200 meter freestyle season, the Americans finished second behind the People's Republic of China .

She won her first gold medal at the 2011 World Swimming Championships in Shanghai . In the 4 × 200 meter freestyle, she achieved first place with Missy Franklin , Dagny Knutson and Katie Hoff ahead of Australia and China. In 2012 she qualified in the 200, 400 and 100 meter freestyle for the 2012 Summer Olympics. In the 200 meter freestyle competition, she also swam a time of 1: 54.40, thus improving her own record in America. At the Olympic Games, Schmitt finally won gold over the 200 meter freestyle. Here she achieved a new Olympic record with the best time of 1: 53.61 . She won another gold medal with the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay together with Missy Franklin, Dana Vollmer and Shannon Vreeland , also in an Olympic record time of 7: 42.92. Schmitt won a silver medal in the 400 meter freestyle, and she won bronze in the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay together with Missy Franklin, Jessica Hardy and Lea Neal .
