Australia took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in the Chinese capital Beijing with 432 athletes, 199 women and 233 men.

Since 1896 it was Australia's 26th participation in the Summer Olympics . This made Australia, along with Greece , France , Switzerland and the United Kingdom, one of the five nations that had previously participated in all the Summer Olympics.

The youngest participant in Australia was swimmer Emily Seebohm at 16 years and 67 days , and the oldest participant in rider Laurie Lever (60 years and 311 days).

Flag bearer

The rower James Tomkins carried the flag of Australia during the opening ceremony at the National Stadium ; at the closing ceremony it was worn by swimmer Stephanie Rice .

Medalist

14 won gold, 15 silver and 17 bronze medals, the Australian team finished 6th in the medal count .

The most successful participant in Australia was the swimmer Stephanie Rice , she won three gold medals. Most of the medals (2 × gold, 1 × silver and 1 × bronze) were won by her team colleague Libby Trickett .
