Gambia took part in the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing under the IOC country code GAM. It was the seventh participation of the African nation, which first took part in the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles .
The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) announced three athletes, two more were shortlisted and they hoped to travel to Beijing through a wildcard from the IOC. At the end of July they were in a training camp in Kenya. Hopes were fulfilled for Ansu Sowe , planned for the 1500-meter run , and Bakary Jabbi , planned for the 800-meter run , not.
Participants by sport
Track and field athlete Jaysuma Saidy Ndure , who competed for Gambia at the 2004 Summer Olympics and was his team's flag bearer, is considered "the discovery" in the international sprint scene. However, he started in the 100 and 200 meters for his adopted home Norway, whose citizenship he took on in 2006.
The American footballer Charlie Davies , who plays in Sweden, took part in the Olympic tournament with the US national team. Davies father comes from Gambia, so Davies also has Gambian citizenship under Gambian law.
