In 2008, Germany took part in the Summer Olympics for the 22nd time. On May 29, 2008, the German Olympic Sports Confederation (DOSB)namedthe first 79 qualified athletesfor the Summer Olympics in Beijing . In a second round on June 23, another 125 athletes were nominated. The third and final regular nomination round with 121 nominations took place on July 15th. The nomination of the 115 team athletes took place on July 20. On the same day, the cyclist Gerald Ciolek was nominated. The tennis professional Rainer Schüttler , the swimmer Rafed El-Masri , who got the approval from the Syrian Association in time, as well as the wrestler Alexandra Engelhardt because of a further starting place assigned at short notice by the World Wrestling Association, could be nominated on July 23.

The triple jumper Charles Friedek failed with his attempt to force participation on the court route. He argued with a loophole in the set of rules, where it is written that the standard must be provided twice. Friedek managed this, but in one competition and not in two competitions as required by the DLV. The swimmer Vipa Bernhardt , who also wanted to fight for her participation on the court route, later withdrew her application. She had claimed that her direct competitor for the starting place in the German team, Anne Poleska , had started for a foreign club, contrary to the statutes of the German Swimming Association. Poleska then affirmed that this was not the case.

Aside from baseball and softball , Germany was represented in 26 of the 28 sports with 434 athletes, including 241 men and 193 women. The sports team was accompanied by 55 doctors and physiotherapists as well as 240 coaches and supervisors. On July 26th, Federal President Horst Köhler said goodbye to the German team in Berlin; the first athletes arrived in Beijing the next day. DOSB General Director Michael Vesper led the German team in China as Chef de Mission . The flag bearer for the opening ceremony was basketball player Dirk Nowitzki . Gold medalist Katrin Wagner-Augustin carried the German flag at the graduation ceremony . With 41 medals won, the number of podium places also decreased at the 2008 Olympic Games. The number of German medals has been falling since the first Olympic Games after reunification in Barcelona in 1992. In 1992 Germany won 82 medals, four years later 65 in Atlanta, 56 in Sydney and 49 in Athens in 2004. However, the number of gold medals rose from 13 to 16 compared to the Games in Athens and Sydney. Only at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London was there a slight increase in the number of medals won.

All five German athletes qualified for the Olympic Games via the world rankings of the Badminton World Federation (BWF). In the men's category, German champion Marc Zwiebler (1st BC Beuel) was ranked 30th in the ranking from May 1, 2008, which the BWF used as a basis for qualification, thus securing the German Badminton Association (DBV) a starting place. In the women’s category, Xu Huaiwen (1. BC Bischmisheim) finished eighth and Juliane Schenk (SG EBT Berlin) came 13th two places in the individual competition. Both competed in 2004 in Athens in singles, singles and doubles.

In the mixed competition, the 13th place in the world rankings guaranteed Kristof Hopp (1st BC Bischmisheim) and Birgit Overzier (1st BC Beuel) participation. The duo Ingo Kindervater / Kathrin Piotrowski narrowly missed the qualification in 16th place, as according to the BWF regulations, the starting field was filled with poorly placed pairs from continents not yet considered.

In the doubles competitions, the men's couples Kristof Hopp / Ingo Kindervater (19th), Roman Spitko / Michael Fuchs (29th) and Johannes Schöttler / Tim Dettmann (32nd), as well as the women's Nicole Grether / Juliane Schenk ( 23rd, due to a cruciate ligament rupture by Grether) and Carina Mette / Birgit Overzier (29th), the Olympic norm is not.

The German men's national team took part in the Olympic Games for the first time since 1992. She initially failed to qualify directly at the European Championships in September 2007, but secured fifth place in the Olympic qualification tournament in Athens. There the team managed to get the ticket to Beijing with third place. However, the team failed in the preliminary round in the game against China with 55:59.

The women's national team lost its chances of participating in the 2007 European Championship early on by finishing 11th .

The beach volleyball players qualified by collecting points for a ranking list in various tournaments. Julius Brink and Christoph Dieckmann as well as David Klemperer and Eric Koreng achieved the necessary lead at the Grand Slam in Moscow on July 5, 2008. The decision for Sara Goller and Laura Ludwig was also made in this tournament because their competitors did not achieve sufficient results. Stephanie Pohl and Okka Rau were the last German team to qualify at the tournament in Marseille .

The men's national team missed direct qualification for the Olympic Games with the quarter-finals at the 2007 World Championships and sixth place at the European qualifying tournament in September 2007. Participation was only secured with victory in the FINA qualification tournament held in Oradea , Romania in March 2008 .

In contrast, the women's national team, eleventh in the 2007 World Cup, failed early. With a seventh place at the European qualifying tournament in Kirishi in August 2007 , not even the qualification for the FINA qualifying tournament succeeded. The originally planned regular player Steffen Dierolf had to cancel his participation due to a serious heart disease. National coach Hagen Stamm then appointed his son Marko Stamm , who was planned as a replacement until then.
