qualification
Each country was allowed to send a maximum of two participants in the individual competitions as well as a team of two in each of the synchronous competitions. A maximum of 34 individual starters and 8 synchronous teams per discipline were permitted. Quota places for the respective NOK were achieved in each of the four individual disciplines by the twelve finalists of the 12th Swimming World Championships from March 17 to April 1, 2007 in Melbourne and the 18 semi-finalists of the World Cup from February 19 to 24, 2008 in Beijing. The remaining starting places, the number of which depended on the extent to which the quota starters qualified by the World Cup and the World Cup overlap, were determined after the World Cup.
The hosts China, the respective medal winners of the 2007 World Cup (if the Chinese were among them, the fourth-placed team moved up), as well as the four best of the remaining teams at the 2008 World Cup were qualified for the synchronized competitions.
