Camelia Alina Potec (born February 19, 1982 in Brăila ) is a former Romanian swimmer and Olympic champion.

Career

Potec started swimming at the age of eight. According to her own statement, she inherited her passion for water from her father Ion Ionescu , a former sailor who also trains her. Your home club is the Club Sportiv Municipal Braila .

In 1999 Potec was double European champion over 200 m and 400 m freestyle at the European Championships . At the European Swimming Championships in 2000 , she won gold with the Romanian 4 × 200 m freestyle relay.

At the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney , Potec advanced to the finals of the 200 m freestyle, where she finished seventh. With the Romanian 4 × 200 m freestyle relay, she came fourth behind the USA, Australia and Germany. That year she also came second overall in the top-class Mare Nostrum series of meetings.

She confirmed her athletic achievements at the 2001 World Swimming Championships in Fukuoka . There she won the bronze medal in the 200 m freestyle and finished 6th in the 400 m freestyle. In 2004 she became European champion in the 200 m freestyle.

Potec celebrated the greatest success of her career at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens . In the 200 m freestyle she surprisingly won the gold medal on August 17, 2004 . Potec only went into the final with the seventh best qualifying time, but in the end prevailed with 19 hundredths ahead of the Italian Federica Pellegrini . In the same year she also won the Mare Nostrum meeting series in front of her compatriot Răzvan Florea .

In 2008 she won the silver medal at the short course world championships over 400 m freestyle. At the European Swimming Championships in the same year she was second in the 200 m freestyle and third in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle. At the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, she was fourth in the 800 m freestyle, fifth in the 200 m freestyle and sixth in the 400 m freestyle.

At the swimming world championships in Rome in 2009 she started over the longer freestyle courses and won the bronze medal over 1500 m. She also reached the final over 400 m (6th place) and 800 m (5th place). In 2012 Potec took part in their fourth Olympic Games in London , but could not qualify for a final.

In 2013, Potec was elected chairman of the Romanian Swimming Federation. In 2016 she also became Vice President of the Romanian Olympic Committee .
