Carmela Schmidt (born May 16, 1962 in Halle (Saale) ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the GDR .
At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , her international swimming career began with winning two bronze medals in the 200 meters and 400 meters freestyle. A year later she was able to win her first title with victories over 200 meters and 800 meters at the European Championships. In 1982 she managed to win the 400 meter freestyle course at the World Championships.
Carmela Schmidt was married to the rower Carl Ertel .
