Simona Quadarella (born December 18, 1998 in Rome ) is an Italian swimmer who is successful over the longer freestyle distances . She set national records in the 800 m freestyle and 1500 m freestyle.
Career
Quadarella won her first major international medal at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympic Games by winning the 800 m freestyle . Over half the distance she reached seventh place in the final.
At the European Swimming Championships in 2016 she reached the finals of major championships for the first time and took fifth place in both the 800 m and the 1500 m freestyle. She achieved her first medal at European or World Championships the following year with third place at the World Long Track World Championships over 1500 m freestyle. She also achieved bronze at the European Short Course Championships held in December , this time in the 800 m freestyle.
She achieved her final breakthrough in the world class during the European Swimming Championships in 2018 . She was European champion in the 400 m, 800 m and 1500 m freestyle and only had to admit defeat to the Chinese Wang Jianjiahe at the 2018 Short Course World Championships .
At the 2019 World Swimming Championships in Gwangju , she won the 1500 m freestyle in the absence of defending champion Katie Ledecky and was thus the first long course world champion. With her winning time of 15: 40.89 minutes, she also set a new Italian record over this distance. In the final of the 800 m freestyle, Quadarella came second behind Ledecky and also beat the previous national record over this distance in 8: 14.99 minutes. In December she was double European champion in the 400 m and 800 m freestyle on the short course .
Awards
In 2018 Quadarella won the Gazzetta Sports Awards in the Revelation of the Year category ("Rivelazione dell'anno").
