Anna Sui (born August 4, 1955 in Detroit , Michigan ) is an American fashion designer .

Life

Anna Sui was born in Detroit in 1955 as the daughter of Chinese immigrants. She was interested in fashion design at a young age and collected photo series from fashion magazines, which she still uses as a source of inspiration today. After graduating from high school, she moved to New York and trained at the prestigious Parsons School of Design . There she met the current Vogue photographer Steven Meisel , for whom she worked as a stylist after initially working for small sportswear manufacturers and before setting up on her own in 1980.

In 1991 she had her first own fashion show as a designer, at which the supermodels Linda Evangelista and Naomi Campbell, who are good friends with her , presented their fashion on the catwalk and thus made her famous in the New York fashion scene. She then relocated her studio from her apartment to her current quarter in the Garment District . She opened her first boutique in 1992 at 113, Greene Street, SoHo . In the same year, at the age of 37, she received the young talent award at the CFDA Fashion Awards . In 1997 she opened a boutique in Tokyo and in 1999 another at Sunset Plaza in Los Angeles .

In 1999 she launched her first perfume, Anna Sui, and her first line of cosmetics. Other women's fragrances such as Dreams (2000), Sui Love (2002), Sui Dolly Girl (2003), Ooh la Love (2004) and Secret Wish (2005) followed. Her clients include Nicole Kidman , Drew Barrymore , Sofia Coppola , Cher and Madonna .

On the occasion of her 25-year-old label, the exhibition “The World of Anna Sui” was dedicated to Sui from May to October 2017 in the Fashion and Textile Museum in London . It was the first retrospective for an American fashion designer in England. Parts of their collections as well as mood boards , drawings and photographs were shown.

style

Anna Suis Mode shows the most diverse cultural influences with style elements of punk , the hippie movement, “European chic” and traditional Chinese clothing. In addition, she often allows her weakness for the 1920s and especially for the 1960s to flow into her creations. She does not attach particular importance to luxury and precious fabrics. Examples:
