Ardabil ( Persian استان اردبيل, Pronunciation: / ærdæˈbiːl /, Azerbaijani Ərdəbil ) is one of the 31 provinces of Iran . The capital is the city of the same name Ardabil .

In the province 1,270,420 people (2006 census) live in an area of ​​17,800 square kilometers; this corresponds to a population density of 71 inhabitants per square kilometer.

geography

The province belonging to the Azerbaijan region is located in northwestern Iran on the border with the Republic of Azerbaijan and the Caspian Sea . Temperatures rise to a maximum of 35 degrees Celsius in summer and drop to minus 25 degrees Celsius in winter. In Ardabil is the Sabalan , with 4811 m the third highest mountain and second highest volcano in the country.
