Walter Armin Ganz (born March 26, 1948 in Knoxville (Tennessee) , † October 9, 1995 in Sausalito , California , United States ) was an American film architect .

Life

Ganz studied philosophy and architecture at the University of his home state Tennessee and continued these studies at Washington University in St. Louis . Ganz gained practical experience in the film industry in the 1970s as a director of short films. In 1981 Alan Parker engaged him for his married drama " Du oder keine ", where Ganz assisted the film architect Stu Campbell. Armin Ganz initially stayed at Parker's side and cooperated on the creation of the film structures for his subsequent productions Birdy (again with Stu Campbell) and Angel Heart (with Kristi Zea ). In between he was also involved in the scenography of Roger Moore 's last James Bond film In the Face of Death , where he executed the American sequences.

Of Ganz's later film architectures, the one about the large-scale carmaker portrait Tucker is particularly noteworthy: an achievement that earned him an Oscar nomination. Armin Ganz died at the age of 47 on his houseboat in Sausalito as a result of a heart attack . At the time of his death, he was in the preparatory phase for the tragic comedy Jack . His work was continued by his colleague Dean Tavoularis , with whom he had already worked at Tucker . In the opening credits of this film, he himself is still listed as the set decorator.
