Assaba ( Arabic ولاية العصابة, DMG Wilāyat al-ʿAṣāba ) is an administrative region in the south of the West African country of Mauritania . In 2017, the region's population was estimated at 360,200.

The capital of Assaba is Kiffa , another important center is Kankossa . Assaba is divided into the five departments Barkewol , Boumdeid , Guérou , Kankossa and Kiffa .

The region borders in the north on the administrative regions Brakna and Tagant , in the east on Hodh El Gharbi , in the south on neighboring Mali and in the west on Gorgol and Guidimaka .
