Aurach bei Kitzbühel is a municipality with 1116 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2020) in the Kitzbühel district , Tyrol ( Austria ). The community is located in the judicial district of Kitzbühel .

geography

Aurach is about five kilometers south of Kitzbühel, in the Leukental in the middle of the Kitzbühel Alps , on the road to Pass Thurn . The settlement is divided into Unteraurach, Oberaurach and several scattered settlements and hamlets. Due to the tourism in the catchment area of Kitzbühel, active settlement activity has started in the original scattered settlements of Haberberg and Kochau. Districts are Haberberg, Haselwand, Kochau, Oberaurach, Sonnberg, Unteraurach and Wiesenegg-Grüntal. The mining around the Kelchalm area, which has now ceased, is historically significant .

history

The municipality of Aurach has been settled since prehistoric times. Already 1000 to 800 BC In BC copper was mined on the Kelchalpe . Most of the metal deposits at that time were exported. Objects from that time still exist today that can be viewed in the Kitzbühel Museum of Local History . After mining stopped, the settlers withdrew from this region.

Only in the 7th century AD did new settlers arrive and Aurach was first mentioned in 1289 as "Orwiorwe". 1464 Aurach is referred to in the Jochberger tax book as part of the “Jochberger Quarter”. Aurach belonged to the Duchy of Bavaria until 1504 . In the same year the place came to the County of Tyrol .

In 1833 Aurach became an independent municipality and during this time the mining industry was revived. Copper was mined until 1926 , after which the market situation changed and as a result these activities ended.

Church history

The parish Aurach originally belongs to the deanery St. Johann in Tirol . From 1217 to 1807 the deanery and the parish belonged to the diocese of Chiemsee , before and afterwards to the archdiocese of Salzburg .

It is interesting that not a single priest lived in the village until 1665 . Only when a contract was signed with the Dominicans in Kitzbühel were regular Sunday services and catechism lessons introduced . In 1739 the Scapular Brotherhood was founded "in honor of the Holy Trinity to buy out the captured Christians". This brotherhood was an essential part of the church life of the Aurach people. In 1722 the church was raised to an expositur . Aurach became a vicariate in 1787 and the parish has been independent since 1891.

The earliest mention of the church , which was already in 1324, is not the date of its construction. A church in Oberaurach may have been built earlier. In the year 2000 archaeological excavations took place, which provide evidence that the Aurach parish church, as it exists today, was built in the 14th century. No previous structures were discovered. It is noteworthy, however, that the church had never changed in the years after 1324, although the population had tripled. It can be assumed that the nave was originally closed off by a flat wooden beam ceiling. Only the two-bay chancel was vaulted back then. The tower on the north side was lower at that time than it is today.

The patronage of the Church is St. Rupert . It is probably related to the long-distance transportation of the salt . On the one hand, the “ white gold ” came over the Thurn Pass from Pinzgau , and on the other hand it was transported on the Samerweg from Saalbach over the Oberreiter Joch.
