On the third day of the third test, Australian player Cameron Bancroft was filmed with television cameras manipulating the ball with an unknown yellow object. This was also shown on the stadium screens and after substitute Peter Handscomb spoke to Bancroft after a walkie talkie with trainer Darren Lehmann , he made it disappear in his pants. The two referees, Nigel Llong and Richard Illingworth , became aware of this and spoke to Bancroft, who showed a black cloth during the conversation. After the conversation, the referees waived the usual measures in a case of ball tampering , the exchange of the ball and the imposition of penalty runs. After the game was over for the day, Bancroft announced in a press conference that he had lied to the referees and that the manipulation of the ball had been agreed with the Australian team's management team during the previous lunch break, which was confirmed by team captain Steve Smith . Smith initially refused to resign. After the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced that the behavior of the Australian team was a "shocking disappointment" and called on the Federation to act quickly, it was announced on the morning of the fourth day that Smith and his Vice-Captain David Warner had been released from theirs until the end of the test Would step down and wicket keeper Tim Paine took over the captaincy. Smith and Bancroft received a fine from the ICC , and Smith was also banned from playing a game. The Australian Association decided that all three players involved should leave South Africa immediately. Warner was identified as the instigator who led Bancroft into the act and Smith tolerated it with knowledge. All three players were banned from international and national cricket in Australia, Bancroft for 9 months, Warner and Smith for one year. It was also decided that Bancroft and Smith could not take on a leadership role in the Australian national team for two years, Warner was banned from such a position for life. Smith and Warner were each to serve as captain in the subsequent Indian Premier League season, but were also banned there. In the wake of the media outrage, coach Darren Lehmann also resigned. Steve Smith publicly apologized for his unsportsmanlike conduct.
