  • The Autostrada A20 ( Italian for 'Motorway A20') is an Italian motorway in Sicily that runs from Messina to Palermo . It is 181 km long and partly toll roads . A section of around 20 km in length, which runs directly past the city limits of Messina, can be driven free of charge.

The motorway begins in Messina as a direct continuation of the A18 (Messina - Catania ) and ends shortly before Palermo in Buonfornello at a motorway triangle with the A19 (Palermo - Catania).

    course

The bridge of the A20 over the Tusa

The motorway is of fundamental importance for Sicily as it connects the regional capital of Palermo with Messina. The first section of the motorway in the urban area of Messina is toll-free up to the Messina Boccetta junction. From here it goes west, along the Tyrrhenian coast of Sicily towards Palermo. First, the motorway crosses the Peloritani Valley, then the A 20 runs again from the Patti junction to Rocca di Capri in the mountains. From then on the landscape becomes noticeably flatter and the motorway crosses the valley of the Niceto and the wide plain of Milazzo at sea level. The youngest section of the motorway begins at the Sant'Agata di Militello junction and now leads through a series of longer tunnels and over numerous valley crossings through the mountains and slopes of the Nebrodi coastal range. At Buonfornello the A20 finally joins the A19 Palermo - Catania.

    useful information

This motorway is very important for the island of Sicily , as it connects the capital Palermo with Messina and thus also with the Italian mainland . The A20 was only opened to traffic on December 21, 2004 by the then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi , as the construction of the route caused great difficulties due to the rugged mountains in the north of the island. However, the route could only be used continuously in the direction of Messina and was initially free of charge on the newly opened section due to the lack of toll stations. The last section between Tusa and Castelbuono in the direction of Palermo was opened to traffic on July 21, 2005. Only then was the A20 passable in both directions. A high number of bridges and tunnels (52 in total) are characteristic of the A20.

    particularities

The Villa Romana di Patti was discovered during the construction of the motorway . Today a bridge leads over the excavation site. The entire construction period was 35 years: the first tendering for work was in 1969. The costs amounted to around € 800 million. In August 2006, the Mistretta public prosecutor brought charges against eight responsible employees of ANAS , Consorzio per le autostrade siciliane , the operating company, and the company responsible for design and construction management, because they had approved the opening in December 2004 without the necessary technical requirements .
