Babacar Gaye

Babacar Gaye (born January 31, 1951 in Saint-Louis ) is a Senegalese diplomat and officer, today Lieutenant General . From 2005 to 2010 he was the military leader of MONUC in the Congo and in 2012 took over the management of UNSMIS in Syria . Babacar Gaye is the son of the former Secretary General of the OIC and former Foreign Minister of Senegal, Amadou Karim Gaye .

Gaye attended the École spéciale militaire de Saint-Cyr from 1970 to 1972 , completed various training courses at institutions of the French and Belgian military and from 1986 to 1988 was at the École supérieure de guerre in Paris .

From August 1979 to March 1980 he commanded the Senegalese UNIFIL contingent and served in the UNEF from July 1974 to February 1975 . During Operation Desert Storm in 1991, Gaye was the commander of the Senegalese contingent stationed in Dhahran , Saudi Arabia , and from 1994 to 1997 director of the Senegalese secret service . In 2000 he was promoted to Brigadier General as Chef d'état-major general des armées . His promotion to Divisional General took place in 2002. In January 2004, President Abdoulaye Wade named him Ambassador of Senegal in Germany . The then UN Secretary General Kofi Annan appointed Gaye , who has meanwhile been appointed Lieutenant General , as military leader of MUNOC in March 2005. He led the mission until October 2008. He reassumed command in November 2008 and relinquished it in August 2010. Gaye was then appointed by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon as Military Advisor for Peacekeeping Operations at the UN headquarters in New York . On July 20, 2012 he took over the management of UNSMIS from the Norwegian Major General Robert Mood .

Babacar Gaye was released in New York on August 12, 2015, according to an official announcement from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. Blue helmet soldiers led by Gaye are said to have raped a 12-year-old girl and arbitrarily shot a 16-year-old boy and his father in early August.
